The State of Equity Research : 2011

Whither, Equity Research Profession?

What is the state of the Equity Research profession?  How has it been affected by the structural changes in the finance industry? What has happened to the traditional institutional investor market for hiring equity research professionals? What are rising areas of growth for the elite of those practicing the equity research profession? Is international still the main growth area for equity research as discussed in last year’s State of Equity Research program? Who is hiring and where is the hiring being done?

These and many more questions pertaining to the core of the equity research profession will be discussed in the Second Annual State of Equity Research program of the Stamford CFA Society. The panel will be hosted by Richard Lipstein from the Wall St recruiting firm Boyden. Joining him will be a number of senior equity research directors from across spectrum of investment management firms. The discussion will cover equity research industry in general, and potential career paths for aspiring equity analysts.

The Panel:

H. Perry Boyle, Jr., CFA – Director of Research and a Managing Director at SAC Capital Advisors

Perry is the Director of Research and a Managing Director at SAC Capital Advisors. He sits on the Executive Committee of the firm and chairs the Investment Committee. Prior to joining the firm in December 2004, Perry was Co-Head of Research at Thomas Weisel Partners, LLC, where he was a founding partner. Previously he was with Alex. Brown & Sons as a Senior Analyst covering Transportation and Business Services companies. He has also worked as a consultant with Booz-Allen & Hamilton and as an investment banker with Salomon Brothers Inc. Perry holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and an AB in Economics from Stanford University. He is a director of the Connecticut Hedge Fund Association and has guest lectured at several business schools including Tuck and the Yale School of Management.

Robert Hoehn, Director of Equity Research at Sterne Agee

Bob Hoehn is the Director of Research at Sterne Agee. Bob has over 32 years of experience on Wall Street, over 20 years of that as an analyst. He was a health care analyst at C.J. Lawrence, where he made the Institutional Investor All-America list. Following C.J. Lawrence, he covered health services at Bear Stearns and headed up the health care group at Salomon Brothers and ING Barings. While at ING Barings, in 2000, Bulldog Research named Bob the top stock picker on the Street. Bob became Director of Research at ING, followed by Fulcrum Global Partners, and now, Sterne Agee.

Jason Meshwork, Principal at BAIT Consulting

Jason Meshwork is a Principal at BAIT Consulting, a global practice providing strategic, regulatory and operational consulting to clients including Institutional Sell & Buy Side Firms, Wealth Management Businesses and Commercial Banks. BAIT was founded in 2000 and has since provided strategic consulting services in both North America and Europe to more than fifteen top tier financial services firms. Jason delivers in-depth analysis and solutions to the multi-faceted challenges faced by his clients. Jason has worked with Senior Management Teams, Heads of Research, Sales and Trading businesses and Chief Compliance Officers to drive change, design and build infrastructure, maximize efficiencies and solve business, regulatory and technical challenges. Jason is also an active investor and advisor to social media companies with a focus on the emerging nexus between social media and financial services.

Jason has over fifteen years of experience in the financial services sector. From 2006 through 2010 he was Head of Strategic Initiatives, Risk Management/Compliance & Technology in the Global Research Department of RBC Capital Markets. In that role, Jason was responsible for strategic planning and profitability of Research, Research operations and compliance, new methodologies of distribution (including multi-media and emerging technologies), CRM and strategic partnerships. Jason has also led or been involved in numerous industry initiatives and is focused on the evolution and impact of technology and social media to Research/content delivery.

Graham Lyndhurst Copley – Head of US Equities, Macquarie Capital (USA) Inc.

Graham Copley – Head of US Equities, Macquarie Capital (USA) Inc.   Graham is a chemical engineer by education and has spent roughly half of his career in the chemical industry and half in investment research and equity management.  Most recently Graham was Head of US Equities for Macquarie.  He was hired in 2007 to build new US cash equities business, including research, sales, syndicate and trading.  The business was built organically and through two acquisitions.  The high point of the build was in spring of 2010 when the publishing team of 45 analysts ranked 11th in the Greenwich survey – fastest growth ever seen in the Greenwich survey.

In addition, Graham was a Board director of Macquarie Securities USA (the broker dealer) for 3 years; Compliance committee director; 401K advisory board director; member of the US management committee of Macquarie;

 Prior to Macquarie Graham held the role of Global head of equity research for HSBC.  The group included around 185 analysts and associates globally, plus support, plus an off-shoring operation in India with an additional 100 analysts.  The on-shore research was run out of 12 offices globally.

Prior to management roles in the equity business, Graham was a research analyst at Sanford C Bernstein & Co. LLC from 1996 to 2004, covering the chemical industry, where he was consistently ranked within the top three analysts in the sector in the US.

Prior to moving to New York, Graham was a consultant in the chemical industry with CMAI for 8 years, based initially in London and then in Houston.  Prior to CMAI, Graham began his career with BP in London.  Graham holds a Bachelor of chemical engineering and business studies degree from Imperial College London.

Geoff Kieburtz, Managing Director, Senior Energy Analyst, Weeden & Co. LP

Geoff Kieburtz is a Managing Director and Director of Energy Research at Weeden & Co. Geoff joined Weeden in 2008 to help build the firm’s in-house research effort. Prior to joining Weeden, Geoff was the oil service analyst at Citigoup where he received recognition from Institutional Investor, the Wall Street Journal and others over 16 years. Geoff holds a Masters from the Yale School of Management and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford. Prior to business school, Geoff worked in the oilfield for Schlumberger in various international locations. He also worked four years as a management consultant with Marakon Associates before joining Salomon Brothers in 1992.

Richard Lipstein – PANEL MODERATOR
Managing Director and Partner at Boyden Global Executive Search

Richard Lipstein is Managing Director and Partner at Boyden Global Executive Search.  A search consultant since 1989, he previously worked on Wall Street and in the media industry.

Richard recently joined the Board of Directors of the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) after serving four years as Chairman of its Career Development Committee.

He and has produced and moderated a wide variety of discussions related to the investment and securities profession over the last decade, including at least four focused on equity research. 

This is the second year Richard is leading the Stamford CFA Society Panel on the State of Equity Research.
